Cutting is only half the job

A modern car key does two separate things. The metal blade turns the lock, and an electronic transponder chip inside the plastic head tells the car’s immobiliser that the key is genuine. Cutting a blade that fits the lock perfectly will still leave you with a key that turns but does not start the engine, because the immobiliser has not recognised it.

That is why key cutting and key programming go together on almost anything built since the late 1990s, when immobilisers became standard fitment on new cars in the UK. Keys with a remote locking fob add a third element, and keyless or proximity systems — where the car unlocks as you approach and starts on a button — are different again.

Because a car key is effectively a security device, you should expect to prove the vehicle is yours before anyone cuts one. That normally means photographic identification and the V5C registration document, or other evidence of entitlement if the V5C is not to hand. Any locksmith who does not ask is one to be wary of.

Ken’s has been cutting keys in Bulwell for over 45 years, and the mobile service covers Nottingham and the surrounding towns, so a key can be cut and programmed at the roadside if the car cannot be brought in.

Common questions

Key cutting questions

Do I need to bring identification?

Yes. A car key is a security item, so you should expect to show photographic ID and the V5C registration document, or other proof that the vehicle is yours.

Why does a new key need programming as well as cutting?

The blade operates the lock, but a chip in the key head has to be recognised by the immobiliser before the engine will start. Without programming, the key will turn but the car will not run.

Can you cut a key without the original?

In many cases yes, working from the vehicle rather than copying an existing key. It depends on the make, model and the security system fitted.

Do you cut keys for vans and motorcycles?

We cut and program keys for a wide range of vehicles. If you tell us the make, model and year we can confirm what is involved for yours.
