How suspension affects safety
Suspension does more than make a car comfortable. Springs carry the weight of the vehicle, while shock absorbers damp the movement so the tyres stay in contact with the road surface. When a damper is worn, the tyre skips rather than grips, and braking distances get longer — particularly on a wet or uneven road.
Wear is gradual, which is what makes it easy to miss. The car deteriorates a little at a time and the driver adjusts without noticing. Common signs are the car continuing to bounce after a bump, nose-diving under braking, pulling to one side, knocking noises over rough surfaces, or tyres wearing unevenly across the tread.

Normally yes. Fitting a new damper or spring on one side only leaves the car handling differently left to right, so components are usually replaced across the axle.
Does worn suspension affect braking?
Yes. If the dampers cannot keep the tyres pressed to the road, grip is reduced and stopping distances increase, which matters most in exactly the conditions where you need to stop quickly.
