Two ways to see behind you

Choose how you see the picture

A reversing camera (also called a reverse parking camera or rear-view camera) shows you what’s behind the car the moment you select reverse.

A Steelmate reversing camera and a rear-view mirror with a screen built in. It works as a normal mirror and shows the camera when you select reverse. Ideal if your car has no screen, and popular on vans and motorhomes.

Our work

On your vehicle’s own screen

On this VW Crafter the camera sits in the high-level brake light; on a Mercedes A-Class, in the boot handle. Either way the picture comes up on the screen the vehicle already has.

Fitted rear sensors on my daughter’s 2008 VW Polo. Looks great, just like factory finish. Did the job within the time stated. Highly recommend.

Choosing a reversing camera

Every vehicle has a blind zone directly behind it that the mirrors cannot cover, and it grows with the size of the vehicle. On a large van or a 4×4 it can extend several metres, which is more than enough to hide a bollard, a low wall or a child. A reversing camera removes that blind zone by showing what is actually behind the vehicle rather than what can be inferred from the mirrors.

There are three common ways of displaying the picture. A mirror monitor replaces or clips over the rear-view mirror and stays blank until reverse is selected. A separate dash-mounted screen sits on or near the dashboard. On some vehicles the picture can be fed into the existing factory infotainment screen, which gives the tidiest result where it is possible.

Cameras themselves vary in ways that matter more than the headline resolution. Look at the field of view, how the camera performs in low light, and whether it is properly sealed against water and road salt — a rear-mounted camera lives a hard life. Guidelines overlaid on the picture help judge distance, and some cameras add an audible parking sensor alert.

A retrofit camera is not a legal requirement on a car or van in the UK, but it is one of the more useful accessories to fit, particularly for anyone who reverses into tight spaces daily or tows regularly.

Common questions

Reversing camera questions

Can a reversing camera be fitted to any vehicle?

Most cars and vans can take one. What varies is how the picture is displayed — some vehicles can use the existing factory screen, and others need a mirror monitor or a separate display.

Do reversing cameras work at night?

Most have some low-light capability, and many use infrared to give a usable picture in the dark. Performance varies between cameras, which is worth considering if you often reverse in unlit places.

Is a reversing camera a legal requirement?

Not for cars and vans in the UK. It is a safety accessory rather than something you can be penalised for going without.

Can I have a camera and parking sensors together?

Yes, and they complement each other — the camera shows you what is there, and the sensors warn you about distance while you are looking elsewhere.

Can the camera show on my car's own screen?

On many cars, yes. We connect the camera to your factory screen with an interface made for your make, model and screen, from £500 fitted, including VAT. Send us your reg and we’ll check what yours can take.

Can you repair or replace a reversing camera that has stopped working?

Yes. If your reversing camera has been damaged or has stopped working, we can supply a replacement and fit it for you. Send us your reg and tell us what’s happened.

What is a mirror monitor?

A replacement rear-view mirror with a screen built in. It works as a normal mirror, and shows the camera picture when you select reverse.

Do you fit reversing cameras to vans and motorhomes?

Yes. On vans and motorhomes the camera is often fitted high on the back, like the blue van in our photos, with a mirror monitor showing the picture.

How much does it cost to have a reversing camera fitted?

A Steelmate reversing camera with a mirror monitor is £300 supplied and fitted for cars and £350 for vans, including VAT. Showing the camera on your car’s own screen is from £500, depending on your make, model and screen. We agree the price before we start.

What warranty comes with a reversing camera?

The Steelmate camera and mirror monitor come with Steelmate’s 1-year warranty, and our fitting carries a 12-month guarantee.

How long does reversing camera fitting take?

Allow about 2–3 hours. It depends on your vehicle and whether the picture goes on a mirror monitor or your own screen, so we’ll confirm when you book.
