Worth knowing

Grade and approval: what the codes mean

The grade, such as 5W-30, describes how the oil flows. The first number, with W for winter, is how easily it moves when you start the engine from cold. The second is how thick it stays once the engine is warm.

The approval, such as VW 504.00/507.00, BMW Longlife-04, MB 229.51, Ford WSS-M2C913-D or GM dexos2, is the carmaker’s own standard for that engine. Your handbook lists both, and the right oil needs to match both.

If your handbook gives only an ACEA class, such as C3 or A3/B4, use an oil with that class and the right grade.

Low SAPS oil and particulate filters

Most modern diesels, and many newer petrols, have a particulate filter in the exhaust. The ACEA oil sequences call the C classes (C1 to C6) “low SAPS”: they leave less ash, which protects the filter. The A/B classes, such as A3/B4, leave more ash and are for engines without one.

LongLife or fixed service? Some carmakers, such as Volkswagen, offer a LongLife service with longer gaps between oil changes. These need the LongLife approval in the handbook, such as VW 504.00 or 507.00, so check which one your car follows.

Illustration of checking engine oil with the dipstick: engine off on level ground, wipe and dip, and the oil should sit between the min and max marks

Worth knowing

How much oil, and how to check it

How much oil your engine takes depends on the engine, so check your handbook or WhatsApp us your reg. A 5 litre pack covers an oil change on many small and family cars; larger engines need more. Always fill to the dipstick level rather than by the number.

Check the level every few weeks and before a long drive: engine off, on level ground, after a few minutes. Some newer cars have no dipstick and show the level on the dashboard instead.

Common questions

Engine oil questions

Which engine oil does my car need?

Your handbook or service book gives the grade, such as 5W-30, and the carmaker approval, such as VW 504.00/507.00 or GM dexos2. The right oil matches both. Our finder above matches them to the oils we sell, by your car or by the codes in your handbook, or WhatsApp us your reg and we’ll check for you.

What does 5W-30 mean?

It’s the oil’s grade. The first number, with W for winter, shows how easily it flows when the engine is cold; the lower it is, the faster it reaches the moving parts at start-up. The second number shows how thick it stays when the engine is warm.

What is an oil approval?

A carmaker’s own standard for its engines, such as VW 504.00, BMW Longlife-04, MB 229.51, Ford WSS-M2C913-D or GM dexos2. Your handbook lists the one your engine needs. Some carmakers list only an ACEA class, such as C3, instead.

What is low SAPS oil, and does my car need it?

Low SAPS oils leave less ash, which protects a particulate filter. In the ACEA oil sequences these are the C classes. If your car has a particulate filter, use the low SAPS oil your handbook lists, never a high-ash A/B oil.

How much oil does my car take?

It depends on the engine, so check your handbook or WhatsApp us your reg. A 5 litre pack covers an oil change on many small and family cars, and larger engines need more. Fill to the dipstick level rather than by the number.

How often should I change my engine oil?

Follow the service schedule in your handbook. Some cars have a fixed service every year, others a LongLife service with longer gaps that needs a LongLife-approved oil. Check the level every few weeks in between.

Can I mix different engine oils?

Topping up with a little oil of the same grade and approval is fine. For an oil change, use one oil that matches your car’s specification.

Will using NAPA oil affect my car’s warranty?

Not if the oil matches the specification in your handbook. Under the UK Motor Vehicle Block Exemption, engine oil is an aftermarket part and carmakers shouldn’t make a warranty depend on their own branded oil (CMA guidance). A claim can still be refused if the wrong oil caused the problem, so use the grade and approval your handbook lists.

What’s the difference between fully synthetic and semi-synthetic oil?

Fully synthetic oils are made for modern engines, longer service intervals and low SAPS specifications. Semi-synthetic oils suit many older engines. Use the type and specification your handbook gives.

How do I check my oil level?

Park on level ground with the engine off and wait a few minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it, push it back in fully, then pull it out again: the oil should sit between the two marks. Top up a little at a time. Some newer cars show the level on the dashboard instead.

How quickly do you deliver?

Order by 1pm for next-day delivery. Delivery is £3.99, or £5.99 for an order with a 5 litre pack. You can also collect for free from our Bulwell shop.
