10W-40 explained
What 10W-40 oil is, and which one your car needs
A semi-synthetic grade for older petrol and diesel engines, often listed for cars from the 1990s and 2000s. You’ll also see it written 10W40.
Most 10W-40 oils are high-ash (A3/B4 or A3/B3), so they are not for diesels with a particulate filter: use what your handbook lists.
In our car table, 3% of the engine types list 10W-40. Below, each approval we sell in 10W-40: what it is for, the cars that list it, and the oils that state it.

Questions
10W-40 engine oil questions
What does 10W-40 mean?
The 10W is the cold rating: the lower the number, the more easily the oil flows at a cold start, so a 10W flows less freely than a 5W or 0W oil. The 40 is how thick it stays at running temperature, the same as a 5W-40.
Is 10W-40 semi-synthetic?
Usually, yes. 10W-40 is mostly made as a semi-synthetic oil for older engines; each oil’s product page says which it is.
Can I use 10W-40 instead of 5W-30?
Only if your handbook lists 10W-40 for your engine. Most cars built since the mid-2000s list a 30 grade such as 5W-30 or 0W-30, often with a low-ash carmaker approval that 10W-40 oils do not carry.
Is 10W-40 good for a high-mileage engine?
Where the handbook lists it, many owners of older, high-mileage engines choose 10W-40 because it stays thicker when hot. Do not go thicker than the handbook allows: a thicker oil reaches the moving parts more slowly from cold.
Can I use 10W-40 in a diesel with a particulate filter?
No, unless your handbook lists it with a low-ash approval, which is rare. Most 10W-40s are high-ash (A3/B4 or A3/B3).
