Worth knowing

Signs your wiper blades need changing

  • Streaks or smears left across the glass
  • Patches the blade misses, often right in your line of sight
  • Juddering, chattering or squeaking as the blade crosses the screen
  • Split, cracked or hardened rubber on the wiping edge

Rubber hardens with sun, frost and road grime, so blades that worked well last winter can start to struggle. If you’re seeing any of these, it’s time for new blades. A blade that obviously isn’t clearing the windscreen is an MOT fail.

What customers say

Fitting work our customers rate

My front windscreen wipers needed replacing, so I contacted them late the previous evening. They booked me in for the next morning at 10.30 am. As I got there it started to rain. A member staff replaced them outside in the pouring 🌧 rain. Very friendly, helpful, and polite staff. Yes, and I would go again.

Fitted rear sensors on my daughter’s 2008 VW Polo. Looks great, just like factory finish. Did the job within the time stated. Highly recommend.

Wiper blades supplied and fitted in Nottingham

Wiper blades are one of the cheapest parts on your car and one of the easiest to forget, until a downpour shows up every streak. The rubber edge wears a little every time it crosses the glass, and sun, frost and road grime harden it, so a blade that worked well last winter can start to smear, judder or miss patches.

At Ken’s Auto Spares in Bulwell we supply and fit wiper blades from £20 a pair, including VAT. Tell us your registration and we’ll find the right blades for your car, front, rear or both, and fit them while you wait, so there’s no wrestling with clips and adaptors in the car park.

Lengths and fittings vary from car to car, so we match the blades to your reg.

There are three main types of blade. Conventional blades have a metal frame that holds the rubber against the glass. Flat blades, sometimes called beam or aero blades, have no frame; a built-in spring presses them evenly along their length, and their slim shape helps them stay on the glass at speed. Hybrid blades combine the two. Each type attaches to the wiper arm with one of several fittings, which is why it pays to have blades matched to your car rather than guessing at the shelf.

Wipers matter for safety: your windscreen wipers and washers are checked in the MOT, and the law says they must be kept in efficient working order. Worn blades are cheap to put right, so it’s worth changing them before the winter weather arrives.

We’re at 2-4 Carey Road, Bulwell, NG6 8AT, serving drivers across Nottingham, Hucknall, Arnold, Beeston and the surrounding areas. Contact our team, call 0115 927 3651 or WhatsApp us your reg.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How much does it cost to have wiper blades fitted?

A pair of wiper blades is supplied and fitted from £20, including VAT. The exact price depends on your car and the blades it takes, so pop in or send us your reg and we’ll tell you before we fit anything.

How long does it take to fit wiper blades?

Usually 10 to 15 minutes, and you can wait while we do it. There’s no need to book: come in any time we’re open, or WhatsApp us your reg first and we’ll have your blades ready.

How do I know which wiper blades fit my car?

Your registration is all we need. Blade lengths and the fittings that attach them to the arm (hook, pin, push-button and others) vary between makes and models, and many cars use a different length on the driver’s and passenger’s side. We match the blades to your car so they fit first time.

How often should wiper blades be changed?

Most motoring guides, including the RAC’s, suggest every 6 to 12 months, and sooner if they start to streak, smear, judder or squeak. Sun, frost and grime all age the rubber, so blades can wear out even if you don’t use them much.

What are the signs my wiper blades are worn?

Streaks or smears on the glass, patches the blade misses, juddering or squeaking as it moves, and rubber that’s split, cracked or hard to the touch. If you notice any of these, it’s time for new blades.

Can worn wiper blades fail an MOT?

They can. Under the DVSA’s MOT inspection manual, a windscreen wiper that’s missing or not working, or a blade that obviously isn’t clearing the windscreen, is a major fault and an MOT fail. A blade that’s worn but still clearing the screen is usually recorded as a minor fault, which doesn’t fail the test but is worth sorting.

Your washers are tested too: they must work and give enough fluid to clear the screen. Rear wipers aren’t part of the MOT. New front blades before your test are a cheap way to avoid a fail.

Can I be fined for worn wiper blades?

Yes. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations say your wipers and washers must be kept in efficient working order, and you must have a full view of the road ahead. Breaking these rules is an offence that can mean a fine of up to £1,000 if it goes to court.

Is fitting included in the price?

Yes. Our price covers the blades and the fitting together, from £20 a pair including VAT, so there’s no separate fitting fee to add on.

Can you fit wiper blades I’ve bought myself?

We only fit wiper blades we supply. One price covers the blades and the fitting, and we match them to your car.

Should I replace both front wiper blades?

We usually recommend changing the front blades as a pair. They’ve done the same work and worn at the same rate, and a new blade on one side only can make the old one look worse by comparison.

Do you fit rear wiper blades?

Yes. Rear blades wear just like front ones, and they often get forgotten. We can fit a rear blade on its own or at the same time as your front pair.

What’s the difference between flat and conventional wiper blades?

Conventional blades use a metal frame to hold the rubber against the glass. Flat (beam or aero) blades have no frame; a built-in spring presses them evenly along their length, and their slim shape helps them stay on the glass at speed. Hybrid blades combine the two. We’ll fit the type that suits your car.

Which brands of wiper blade do you fit?

We fit quality blades from brands including Bosch and Trico. We’ll suggest the right blades for your car and tell you the price first.

Can I buy wiper blades to fit myself?

Of course. We sell wiper blades over the counter at our Bulwell shop and in our online shop. On some newer cars the wipers have to be put into a service position before the blades will come off, so if yours won’t budge, we can fit them for you.

Where are you?

We’re at 2-4 Carey Road, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8AT, with parking for when you visit. We’re open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
