5W-30 explained

What 5W-30 oil is, and which one your car needs

The most common engine oil grade in UK cars. A 5W-30 flows well from cold (the 5W) and stays at a medium thickness once the engine is warm (the 30), which suits most modern petrol and diesel engines. You’ll also see it written 5W30.

Most 5W-30 oils sold today are fully synthetic, and many are low-ash for particulate filters, but they are not all the same: the carmaker approval decides which one your car needs.

In our car table, 81% of the engine types list 5W-30. Below, each approval we sell in 5W-30: what it is for, the cars that list it, and the oils that state it.

Questions

5W-30 engine oil questions

Is 5W-30 fully synthetic?

Most 5W-30 oils, including all the low-ash ones carmakers list, are fully synthetic. A few budget 5W-30s are semi-synthetic; each oil’s product page says which it is.

What is the difference between 5W-30 C2 and C3?

Both are ACEA low-ash classes for engines with a particulate filter. C3 is a full low-ash class in the thicker high-temperature range; C2 is mid-ash and fuel-economy, listed mainly by Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat. Use the one your handbook lists; many oils carry both.

Can I use 5W-30 instead of 5W-40?

Only if your handbook lists 5W-30 for your engine. Some handbooks list both grades with the same approval, others only one: the grade and the approval both need to match.

Is 5W-30 good for diesel engines?

Yes, when it carries the approval your diesel’s handbook lists, such as VW 507.00, BMW Longlife-04, MB 229.51, Ford WSS-M2C913-D or GM dexos2. Diesels with a particulate filter need a low-ash 5W-30.

Do you deliver 5W-30 engine oil?

Yes: order by 1pm Monday to Friday for next-day delivery. NAPA oils can also be collected free from our shop at 2-4 Carey Road, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8AT.
