What we fit
The bulbs we fit
We keep the common bulbs on the shelf at Carey Road. Prices include the bulb, the fitting and VAT:

Worth knowing
Which light is which
A blown bulb is easy to miss from the driver’s seat. The MOT checks your lights front and rear, and a headlight, brake light, indicator or rear light that doesn’t work is a major fault and an MOT fail. Bring it in and we’ll fit the bulb while you wait.

How it works
Sorted in one visit
- Pop in, or give us a shout first. No appointment needed. If you’d like us to have your bulb ready, call or WhatsApp us with your reg.
- We confirm the price. If your car needs trim or the bumper off to reach the bulb, we’ll tell you first.
- Fitted while you wait. At our Bulwell shop, 2-4 Carey Road, NG6 8AT, with parking, open Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
- Drive off with every light working. We fit the bulb and check your lights before you go.
A blown bulb is a small job that gets put off, and it is one of the easiest ways to be pulled over or to fail an MOT. We keep the common headlight, brake, indicator, sidelight, fog and number plate bulbs on the shelf at Carey Road, and we will fit them for you rather than handing you a box and wishing you luck.
Why fitting is not always the five minute job it used to be
On an older car you popped the bonnet and changed the bulb. On plenty of modern vehicles the headlight unit is boxed in behind the wing liner, the battery or the washer bottle, and getting to it means removing trim first. Some manufacturers expect the front bumper to come off. That is the difference between a job worth doing yourself and one worth handing over.
It is also why a bulb that has been forced in by someone in a hurry often comes back — a clip left unseated lets water into the unit, and the next failure is the headlight rather than the bulb.
Upgrading to a brighter bulb
Standard halogen bulbs vary a great deal in output and life, and there are road-legal upgrades that put noticeably more light on the road without changing anything else on the car. They are a straight swap for the standard bulb and they suit anyone doing regular unlit miles.
The important word is road legal. An upgrade bulb has to carry an E mark to be used on the road in the UK, and the very blue-white bulbs sold online often do not. Fitting an HID kit into a headlight designed for halogen is not legal either, however bright it looks. We will tell you what is a genuine upgrade and what will simply fail an MOT.

A few things worth knowing
Bulbs are normally replaced in pairs. They age at the same rate, so when one headlight goes the other is usually not far behind, and a new bulb beside an old one is visibly brighter and often a different colour temperature.
Halogen glass should not be touched with bare fingers. The oil left behind creates a hot spot when the bulb heats up and shortens its life considerably — which is the usual explanation when a brand new bulb fails within weeks.
If a bulb keeps blowing, the bulb is rarely the problem. Water in the unit, a poor earth or a charging fault will all do it, and replacing the bulb again just repeats the outcome. Bring it in and we will find out which it is.

Common questions
Bulb questions
Can you fit a bulb while I wait?
Most bulbs are a counter job and can be done there and then. A few vehicles need trim or the bumper removing to reach the headlight, and those are better booked in — tell us the make and model and we will say which yours is.
Will a blown bulb fail an MOT?
Yes. Lights are checked as part of the test, and a bulb that does not work is a straightforward failure. It is also worth checking the ones you cannot see from the driving seat, such as the number plate lights.
Can I get brighter headlight bulbs?
Yes, and there are genuine road-legal upgrades that put more light on the road as a direct swap. What matters is that the bulb carries an E mark — many of the very blue-white bulbs sold online do not, and a headlight that shines blue rather than white can fail an MOT.
Why does my new bulb keep blowing?
Usually something other than the bulb. Water getting into the light unit, a poor earth connection or a charging fault will all shorten a bulb’s life dramatically. Replacing it again without finding the cause tends to give the same result.
Should both headlight bulbs be changed together?
Normally yes. They age at the same rate, so when one fails the other is usually close behind, and a new bulb next to an old one is noticeably brighter and often a different colour.
How much does bulb fitting cost?
Headlight bulbs are supplied and fitted from £20, and brake, stop, indicator and other bulbs from £15. Brighter road-legal upgrades are from £25. All prices include VAT and are one price for the bulb and the fitting. Common headlight bulbs such as the H7 are at the from price; some cars take dearer bulbs, so the exact price depends on your car. On some cars the bulb is a quick swap, on others trim or the bumper has to come off first. Pop in, or call or WhatsApp us with your reg, and we’ll tell you before we start.
Can you fit a bulb I’ve bought myself?
We only fit bulbs we supply. One price covers the bulb and the fitting, and we’ll find the right bulb for your car.
Which bulb does my car take?
Tell us your reg and we’ll find it. Headlights commonly use halogen bulbs such as H1, H4 or H7. An H4 has two filaments, for dipped and main beam, in one bulb, while an H7 has one; their bases are different, so one can’t stand in for the other. Many brake and tail lights use small bayonet bulbs, and some cars have sealed LED lights rather than bulbs.
What does the MOT check on my lights?
Under the DVSA’s MOT inspection manual, a headlight, brake light, indicator or rear light that doesn’t work is a major fault and an MOT fail. Headlights must also be aimed correctly, match each other and shine white or yellow.
Number plate lights are checked too: if the only one, or all of them, are out it’s a fail; if one of two is out it’s a minor fault. Rear fog lights, and reversing lights on newer cars, have to work as well.
Are LED headlight bulbs legal?
Only approved ones. Since 14 October 2026, MOT testers accept LED replacement bulbs in halogen headlights if they’re approved for that particular headlight and the car carries the maker’s approval sticker. A generic LED bulb without that approval isn’t road legal and fails the MOT, and HID (xenon) conversion kits in halogen headlights aren’t legal either. Ask us before you buy and we’ll tell you what’s right for your car.
Can I be fined for a blown bulb?
Yes. The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations say your lights must be clean and in good working order. The police can give you a notice to get it fixed, usually within 14 days, or a £50 fixed penalty, and if it goes to court the fine can be up to £1,000.
