Understanding the sizes

Taps cut internal threads, dies cut external ones, and both are specified by thread designation — M6 means a 6mm metric thread. Where a set pairs drills with taps, each drill is the correct tapping size for its matching thread.

Working with tap & die set

Drill the tapping hole first, start the tap square to the surface, and back off half a turn for every full turn forward to break the swarf. Use cutting fluid. Forcing a tap is how they snap, and a broken tap in a blind hole is a bad afternoon.
