Understanding the sizes
Hex keys are sized across the flats of the socket in the fastener, so a 5mm key fits a 5mm socket head cap screw. This set covers 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10mm. Using the correct size matters more here than on almost any other tool — a key that is slightly small will round the socket out.
Working with hex key set
The long arm gives reach and leverage; the short arm gets into confined spaces. Ball-end keys let you work at an angle of up to around 25 degrees off centre, which is invaluable in awkward corners, but the ball contacts less metal so the straight end should always be used for final tightening and for freeing anything seized.
