Understanding the sizes

Metric socket sizes are measured across the flats of the fastener, so a 13mm socket fits a 13mm nut or bolt head. Drive size is the square hole the ratchet plugs into: 1/4in for light work in tight spaces, 3/8in as the everyday middle ground, and 1/2in where real torque is needed.

Working with impact socket

Impact sockets are made from chrome molybdenum rather than the chrome vanadium used in hand sockets. Cr-Mo is the more ductile alloy, so it absorbs the hammer blows of an impact wrench and flexes instead of shattering — which is why a polished chrome hand socket should never be put on an impact gun. The blackened phosphate finish resists corrosion and will not flake under repeated shock loading.

Suspension and subframe bolts, brake caliper carriers, driveshaft and prop bolts, engine and gearbox mounts — anywhere a fastener has been torqued down hard. Works on hand ratchets and breaker bars too.
