Understanding the sizes
Chisels and punches are sized by blade or pin width. A wider blade pares a flatter surface; a narrower one gets into tight joints and confined recesses.
Working with chisel
Cut with the bevel down for control and bevel up for a paring cut. Keep the edge sharp — a blunt chisel needs more force and is far more likely to slip. Only strike a chisel fitted with a striking cap or a hooped handle with a hammer; a plain handle takes a mallet.
