Which oil does a Ford Focus take?

The oil your Ford Focus needs depends on its engine and when it was built. Below is what the carmaker lists for each Focus engine — 4 generations and 16 engine types in our table — and the oils we sell that state it: NAPA from our Bulwell shelf, plus Castrol, Mobil and Valvoline delivered next day.

  • Focus Mk4 (2018–2025) — petrol: Ford WSS-M2C948-B (5W-20); diesel: Ford WSS-M2C950-A (0W-30) or Ford WSS-M2C952-A1 (0W-20)

The grade (such as 5W-30) and the approval (such as a carmaker code) both need to match your handbook. If your car has a particulate filter, the low-ash oil the handbook lists protects it.

For the Focus Mk1: 1.4 / 1.6 Zetec-SE (1998–2005), 1.8 / 2.0 Zetec-E (1998–2005), 1.8 TDDi / TDCi; Focus Mk2: 1.4 / 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 / 2.5 ST, 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 TDCi; Focus Mk3: 1.6 / 2.0 TDCi (to 2015). Ford's long-standing 5W-30 specification, listed by many Fords built before about 2015.

Ford WSS-M2C948-B oil

For the Focus Mk3: 1.6 Ti-VCT, 1.0 / 1.5 / 1.6 EcoBoost, 2.0 EcoBoost ST (250 PS) (2012–2018); Focus Mk4: 1.0 EcoBoost (incl. mild hybrid), 1.5 EcoBoost. Ford's 5W-20 specification for the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol and some other EcoBoost engines.

Ford WSS-M2C950-A oil

For the Focus Mk3: 1.5 / 2.0 TDCi (2015 on); Focus Mk4: 2.0 EcoBlue (built to June 2021), 2.0 EcoBlue (built July 2021 on). Ford's 0W-30 specification for many newer diesel engines with a particulate filter.

Ford WSS-M2C937-A oil

For the Focus Mk3: 2.3 EcoBoost RS (2016–2018).

Ford WSS-M2C952-A1 oil

What engine oil does a Ford Focus take?

What grade of oil does a Ford Focus use?

Most Focus engines in our table list 5W-30; others list 5W-20, 0W-30, 0W-40 or 0W-20. Use the grade your handbook gives together with its approval: the same grade can carry different approvals.

Does my Focus need low-ash (low SAPS) oil?

If it has a particulate filter, yes: use the low-ash approval its handbook lists, such as Ford WSS-M2C913-D or Ford WSS-M2C950-A. A high-ash oil can block the filter over time.
