Which oil does a Renault Clio take?

The oil your Renault Clio needs depends on its engine and when it was built. Below is what the carmaker lists for each Clio engine — 4 generations and 11 engine types in our table — and the oils we sell that state it: NAPA from our Bulwell shelf, plus Castrol, Mobil and Valvoline delivered next day.

  • Clio V (2019–now) — petrol: Renault RN17 (5W-30); diesel: Renault RN17 (5W-30)
  • Clio IV (2012–2019) — petrol: Renault RN0700 (5W-30) or Renault RN0710 (5W-40); diesel: Renault RN0720 (5W-30)
  • Clio III (2005–2012) — petrol: Renault RN0700 (5W-30) or Renault RN0710 (5W-40); diesel: Renault RN0710 (5W-40) or Renault RN0720 (5W-30)
  • Clio II (1998–2012) — petrol: Renault RN0700 (5W-30); diesel: Renault RN0710 (5W-40)

The grade (such as 5W-30) and the approval (such as a carmaker code) both need to match your handbook. If your car has a particulate filter, the low-ash oil the handbook lists protects it.

Renault RN0710 oil

For the Clio II: 1.5 dCi; Clio III: 1.2 TCe 100 / 1.6 16V 128 (2007–2012), 1.5 dCi without DPF; Clio IV: 0.9 TCe / 1.2 TCe. Renault's specifications for engines without a particulate filter: RN0700 for petrol and RN0710 for diesel.

Renault RN0700 oil

For the Clio II: 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 petrol; Clio III: 1.2 16V / 1.4 / 1.6 16V (under 128 hp); Clio IV: 1.2 16V. Renault's specifications for engines without a particulate filter: RN0700 for petrol and RN0710 for diesel.

Renault RN0720 oil

For the Clio III: 1.5 dCi with DPF (most Euro 5 cars, c. 2010 on); Clio IV: 1.5 dCi. Renault's low-ash specification for diesels with a particulate filter, used up to about 2018 (Renault, Dacia and some Nissan engines).

Renault RN17 oil

For the Clio V: 1.0 SCe / TCe, 1.6 E-Tech hybrid, 1.5 Blue dCi. Renault's newer specification for most engines from about 2018.

What engine oil does a Renault Clio take?

What grade of oil does a Renault Clio use?

Most Clio engines in our table list 5W-30; others list 5W-40. Use the grade your handbook gives together with its approval: the same grade can carry different approvals.

Does my Clio need low-ash (low SAPS) oil?

If it has a particulate filter, yes: use the low-ash approval its handbook lists, such as Renault RN0720. A high-ash oil can block the filter over time.
