The grade (such as 5W-30) and the approval (such as a carmaker code) both need to match your handbook. If your car has a particulate filter, the low-ash oil the handbook lists protects it.

For the Astra H: 1.4 / 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 Turbo, 1.3 / 1.7 / 1.9 CDTi; Astra J: 1.4 / 1.6 / 1.4 Turbo / 1.6 Turbo (port injection) (2009–2015), 1.6 SIDI Turbo (direct injection) (2013–2015), 1.3 / 1.6 / 1.7 / 2.0 CDTi; Astra K: 1.6 CDTi, 1.5 Turbo D (2019 on). General Motors' specification listed by most Vauxhalls from about 2010, petrol and diesel; it replaces GM-LL-A-025 and GM-LL-B-025.

GM dexos1 Gen 2 oil

For the Astra K: 1.0 Turbo (B10XFT/B10XFL) (2015–2018), 1.4 Turbo (B14XFT/B14XFL), model years 2016-2017, 1.6 Turbo (2015–2018). General Motors' fuel-economy specification for some newer Vauxhall petrol engines.

Stellantis FPW9.55535/03 oil

For the Astra L: 1.2 Turbo (EB2 Gen 1/Gen 2, timing belt), 1.5 Turbo D (DV5R) (2022–2023), 1.5 Turbo D (DV5R, built Feb 2023 on).

Vauxhall OV0401547 oil

For the Astra K: 1.4 Turbo (B14XFT/B14XFL), model year 2018, 1.2 / 1.4 Turbo (2019 on). Vauxhall's 0W-20 specification for some petrol engines from about 2018.

GM LL-A-025 oil

For the Astra G: 1.4 / 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 petrol. General Motors' earlier long-life specifications: LL-A-025 for petrol and LL-B-025 for diesel.

GM LL-B-025 oil

What engine oil does a Vauxhall Astra take?

It depends on the engine and generation. Astra L (2022–now) — petrol: Stellantis FPW9.55535/03 (5W-30) or PSA B71 2010 (0W-20); diesel: Stellantis FPW9.55535/03 (5W-30). What grade of oil does a Vauxhall Astra use?

Most Astra engines in our table list 5W-30; others list 0W-20. Use the grade your handbook gives together with its approval: the same grade can carry different approvals.

Does my Astra need low-ash (low SAPS) oil?

If it has a particulate filter, yes: use the low-ash approval its handbook lists, such as GM dexos2 or GM dexos1 Gen 2. A high-ash oil can block the filter over time.
