Which oil does a VW Polo take?

The oil your VW Polo needs depends on its engine and when it was built. Below is what the carmaker lists for each Polo engine — 3 generations and 7 engine types in our table — and the oils we sell that state it: NAPA from our Bulwell shelf, plus Castrol, Mobil and Valvoline delivered next day.

  • Polo Mk6 (AW) (2017–now) — petrol: VW 508.00 (0W-20) or VW 504.00 (5W-30); diesel: VW 507.00 (5W-30)
  • Polo Mk5 (6R) (2009–2017) — petrol: VW 504.00 (5W-30); diesel: VW 507.00 (5W-30)
  • Polo Mk4 (9N) (2002–2009) — petrol: VW 504.00 (5W-30); diesel: VW 507.00 (5W-40)

The grade (such as 5W-30) and the approval (such as a carmaker code) both need to match your handbook. If your car has a particulate filter, the low-ash oil the handbook lists protects it.

Volkswagen Group LongLife oils: 504.00 for petrol and 507.00 for diesel engines, low ash for particulate filters. Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and Cupra cars on LongLife (variable) servicing list them, and many oils carry both.

VW 507.00 oil

For the Polo Mk4 (9N): 1.4 / 1.9 TDI PD; Polo Mk5 (6R): 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 TDI; Polo Mk6 (AW): 1.6 TDI. Volkswagen Group LongLife oils: 504.00 for petrol and 507.00 for diesel engines, low ash for particulate filters. Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat and Cupra cars on LongLife (variable) servicing list them, and many oils carry both.

VW 508.00 oil

For the Polo Mk6 (AW): 1.0 / 1.0 TSI / 1.5 TSI. Volkswagen Group LongLife IV, the thin 0W-20 oils for many newer VW Group petrol engines (508.00) and some diesels (509.00). Where a handbook lists 508.00, only a 508.00 oil will do.

What grade of oil does a VW Polo use?

Most Polo engines in our table list 5W-30; others list 5W-40 or 0W-20. Use the grade your handbook gives together with its approval: the same grade can carry different approvals.

Does my Polo need low-ash (low SAPS) oil?

If it has a particulate filter, yes: use the low-ash approval its handbook lists, such as VW 504.00, VW 507.00 or VW 508.00. A high-ash oil can block the filter over time.
