Worth knowing
Stop-start batteries: standard, EFB or AGM?
Most cars built in the last ten years have stop-start, and stop-start needs a tougher battery:
- Standard batteries suit cars without stop-start.
- EFB (enhanced flooded) batteries are made for the extra starts of most stop-start cars.
- AGM batteries are for advanced stop-start, brake energy recovery and cars with lots of electrics.
A stop-start car must never have a standard battery fitted: it would wear out within months. A car that came with AGM always needs AGM. The finder only shows batteries that suit your car.
Not sure if your car has stop-start? If the engine switches itself off when you stop, for example at traffic lights, and starts again when you move off, it has stop-start. There’s usually a button to turn it off, often marked with an A in a circle. Choose “Not sure” in the finder and we’ll suggest a stop-start battery: it also works in a car without stop-start.

Worth knowing
Signs your battery is on its way out
- The engine turns over slowly when you start it, often on a cold morning
- The battery warning light comes on
- Dim lights or electrics playing up, such as the clock or radio resetting
- It’s over five years old
- The case looks swollen or is leaking
If you’re seeing any of these, it’s worth replacing the battery before it leaves you stranded.
Why batteries fail in winter. Cold slows the chemistry inside a battery. Battery makers say that at 0°C even a healthy battery loses about 30% of its starting power, just when a cold engine needs more. The RAC says battery problems are the number-one reason for its call-outs, and flat batteries peak in the winter months.

By make
Car batteries for your make
The finder covers every make. These are the cars we see most, and what’s worth knowing about each:
Ford batteries
Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Puma and Transit. Most newer Fords have stop-start and take an EFB or AGM battery. On some models the new battery needs registering with the car’s computer after fitting: we’ll check yours.
Vauxhall batteries
Corsa, Astra, Mokka, Grandland and Vivaro. Newer stop-start Vauxhalls take an EFB or AGM battery, and on some models the battery needs registering after fitting.
Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda batteries
Polo, Golf, Tiguan, Ibiza, Leon, Fabia and Octavia. On most newer models the new battery must be coded to the car so it charges correctly. Stop-start versions take EFB or AGM, and a car that came with AGM needs AGM again.
Audi batteries
A1, A3, A4, Q2, Q3 and Q5. Most newer Audis need the new battery coded to the car after fitting, and many take an AGM battery. A cheaper standard battery in a car built for AGM wears out quickly.
BMW and Mini batteries
1, 3 and 5 Series, X1, X3, X5 and Mini. Many BMWs have the battery in the boot, under the floor, and on BMW and Mini the new battery must be registered with the car after fitting. Many newer models take AGM.
Mercedes-Benz batteries
A, C and E-Class, GLA, GLC and Sprinter. Many newer Mercedes have a small auxiliary battery as well as the main one: an “auxiliary battery malfunction” message on the dash usually means the small one. Most stop-start models take AGM.
Nissan batteries
Micra, Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail. Stop-start versions take an EFB or AGM battery, and some models need the battery registering after fitting. The finder narrows it down by engine and year.
Toyota batteries
Aygo, Yaris, Corolla, C-HR and RAV4. Toyota hybrids have a small 12-volt battery as well as the big hybrid battery. It often sits in the boot or under a rear seat and needs the same type the car came with.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Do you fit car batteries?
Yes, we offer a battery fitting service for cars. We fit it while you wait at our shop in Bulwell. Use our battery finder at the top of this page for an instant price.
Will I lose my car radio code?
If you do not have your car radio code then please let us know before we disconnect your battery. In most cases, we can retain or retrieve radio codes if required.
Which brand of car battery do you sell?
At Ken’s Autos, we sell Banner car batteries from our shop in Nottingham. Banner batteries are a German OE Manufacturer and have produced batteries since 1937, and they’re sold in 80 countries around the world. Many battery brand names have been passed around, sold to different companies who buy the rights to stick the label to their own batteries; this passing around of brands has resulted in some brands losing quality or reputation in the market.
How much does it cost to have a car battery fitted?
Car batteries are fitted from £78.99, including VAT: the battery plus £25 fitting. Stop-start EFB batteries are from £80.99 fitted and AGM from £156.99. The finder at the top of this page shows both prices for your car, fitted or to collect, or WhatsApp us your reg.
Can I buy a battery without having it fitted?
Yes. Choose Collect in the battery finder and pick it up from our Bulwell shop at the battery price, from £53.99 inc. VAT. Reserve it on WhatsApp first so it’s ready for you, and send your reg if you’d like us to check it’s the right one.
Do I need to book?
No appointment needed: come in any time we’re open and we’ll fit your battery while you wait. To be sure we have the right one ready for you, reserve it on WhatsApp or give us a call first.
How long does a car battery last?
Usually around five years. The AA says most last five to seven years, but lots of short trips and power-hungry electrics can wear one out in two or three.
What are the signs of a failing car battery?
The engine turning over slowly when you start it, the battery warning light, dim lights or electrics playing up, a battery that’s over five years old, or a swollen or leaking case. A slow start, especially on a cold morning, is often the first sign.
Why do car batteries fail in winter?
Cold slows the chemistry inside a battery. Battery makers say that at 0°C even a healthy battery loses about 30% of its starting power, just when a cold engine needs more. A battery that was weak in the autumn often gives up on the first frosty morning.
What’s the difference between standard, EFB and AGM batteries?
Standard batteries suit cars without stop-start. EFB (enhanced flooded) batteries are built for the extra starts of most stop-start cars, and AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries are for advanced stop-start, brake energy recovery and cars with lots of electrics. A stop-start car must never have a standard battery, and a car that came with AGM always needs AGM.
How do I know if my car has stop-start?
If the engine switches itself off when you stop, for example at traffic lights, and starts again when you move off, it has stop-start. There’s usually a button to turn it off, often marked with an A in a circle. If you’re not sure, choose “Not sure” in the finder and we’ll suggest a stop-start battery, which also works in cars without it.
Does my new battery need coding to the car?
Many newer cars, including most Audi, BMW, Mini, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen, Land Rover, Jaguar and Mazda models, need the new battery registered with the car’s computer so it charges it correctly. Some Ford, Vauxhall, Nissan, Kia and Hyundai models need it too. We’ll tell you if yours does when you get in touch.
Do you fit other brands as well as Banner?
Yes. Banner is what we keep on the shelf, so it’s the battery we recommend when it fits your car. We also fit Platinum and Fahren batteries from our supplier, usually in the same or next day, and all three carry the same 4-year warranty.
What warranty do your batteries have?
Four years on every battery we sell: Banner, Platinum and Fahren. Keep your receipt; if a battery fails within the warranty, bring the car in and we’ll test it and sort it.
What happens to my old battery?
We take it away and recycle it, free. That goes for batteries we fit and for batteries you collect: bring the old one back when you’re done and we’ll take it off your hands.
Can you test my battery before I buy a new one?
Yes, free. A car that won’t start isn’t always the battery: a tired alternator or a bad connection can look the same. Bring the car in, we’ll test the battery and the charging system, and we’ll only sell you a battery if you need one.
