Understanding the sizes
Metric socket sizes are measured across the flats of the fastener, so a 13mm socket fits a 13mm nut or bolt head. This set covers 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 30 and 32mm. Drive size is the square hole the ratchet plugs into: 1/4in for light work in tight spaces, 3/8in as the everyday middle ground, and 1/2in where real torque is needed.
Working with socket set
A six-point socket grips the flats of a fastener rather than the corners, which is what stops a tight or slightly rounded nut being chewed further. Chrome vanadium is the standard alloy for hand sockets. Hand sockets are for ratchets, T-bars and breaker bars; impact guns need chrome molybdenum impact sockets instead.
