Understanding the sizes

Metric socket sizes are measured across the flats of the fastener, so a 13mm socket fits a 13mm nut or bolt head. Drive size is the square hole the ratchet plugs into: 1/4in for light work in tight spaces, 3/8in as the everyday middle ground, and 1/2in where real torque is needed.

Working with socket set

A six-point socket grips the flats of a fastener rather than the corners, which is what stops a tight or slightly rounded nut being chewed further. Chrome vanadium is the standard alloy for hand sockets. Hand sockets are for ratchets, T-bars and breaker bars; impact guns need chrome molybdenum impact sockets instead.
