0W-20 explained

What 0W-20 oil is, and which one your car needs

A thin, fuel-saving grade for many newer petrol engines and hybrids. 0W-20 flows fastest of all from cold (the 0W) and is thinner when warm (the 20), which cuts friction. You’ll also see it written 0W20.

Only use 0W-20 where your handbook lists it: engines designed for it often need the specific approval, such as VW 508.00 or MB 229.71.

In our car table, 34% of the engine types list 0W-20. Below, each approval we sell in 0W-20: what it is for, the cars that list it, and the oils that state it.

Questions

0W-20 engine oil questions

Can I use 5W-30 instead of 0W-20?

Only if your handbook lists 5W-30 too. Some engines list both (for example VW 504.00 5W-30 as well as 508.00 0W-20), but where a handbook lists only a 0W-20 approval such as VW 508.00 or Vauxhall OV0401547, use that.

Why do newer cars use 0W-20?

A thinner oil reduces friction and fuel use, and reaches the moving parts faster after a cold start. Carmakers design newer engines, hybrids especially, around it.

Is 0W-20 OK in a diesel?

Only where the handbook lists it, as some newer diesels do (for example VW 509.00 or MB 229.71). Most diesels list a 30 grade.

Do you deliver 0W-20 engine oil?

Yes: order by 1pm Monday to Friday for next-day delivery. NAPA oils can also be collected free from our shop at 2-4 Carey Road, Bulwell, Nottingham NG6 8AT.
